Scouting, also known as the Scout Movement, is a worldwide youth movement with the stated aim of supporting young people in their physical, mental and spiritual development, so that they may play constructive roles in society. The movement began in 1907 when Robert Baden-Powell, Lieutenant General in the British Army, held the first Scouting encampment at Brownsea Island in England.
The Scout Association of Zimbabwe is a registered member of the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM). The association was created by the act of Parliament and is registered as a welfare organization and with The Zimbabwe Youth Council.
Zimbabwe like any other countries in Africa is faced with unique challenges requiring interventions/responses. This makes us give scouting specific orientation with the aim to responding to the needs and aspirations of the youth thus making scouting a reliable actor in civil society. This is our way of implementing’ the purpose, principles and mission of our Scout Association.
Today our Association is in co-operation with other Organizations i.e. National Aids Council are involved in a number of community development programs giving their community the needed service in the process acquiring the necessary skills, knowledge and attitudes to become real agents of development. These include children in difficult circumstances projects, reproductive health education, HIV/AIDS, drug abuse, Malaria control and environment awareness, etc.
These projects are very necessary as immediate contributions and provide young people with practical experiences. However, the best contribution Scouting can give to the development of this country in the long term is to train the future leaders that our country needs to overcome its problems.
